Pre-Sea Procedures

After the successful completion of the Pre-Sea training at an approved institute the cadets should get ready for sea and start preparing the documents and if additional courses have to be done should be completed.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

The YFV or Yellow Fever Vaccination is mandatory for seafarers since, by chance the seafarers need to visit a country prone to Yellow Fever. This can prevent the seafarer of getting affected and spreading. This Vaccination can be done at hospitals but need to be certified by an authorised YFV Centre. The Vaccine is given with lifetime validity from the 10th day of the vaccination. The vaccination can be done at the centre with a cost of ₹300 producing the original passport. Private vaccination centres may charge more. The vaccinated person will then be issued an International Certificate of the vaccination consisting the details of the vaccination. The Oral Polio vaccination is advised for cadets joining ships sailing to polio prone countries, and it is free of cost.

Additional Courses

If the cadet has been recruited in a company which has tankers, the cadet has to complete the tanker courses such as Tanker Familiarisation Course for Oil and Chemical Combined and Tanker Familiarisation course for Liquefied Gas Carrier. Since the DGS has ruled out separate Oil and Chemical courses, only the combined course can be done from an approved institute. Before doing these courses the Practical Fire Fighting course (Maybe called a different name by institutes) additional to the Fire Prevention and Firefighting course must be done which is mandatory for doing the tanker courses.

Update of Seafarer’s Profile

The Seafarer’s Profile on the DGS website needs to be updated from time to time  so that the INDoS gets updated according to it and also when printing the profile for any purpose the updated details appear. The Master Checker needs to be checked frequently for the training details after the completion of each course including the STCW modular courses else the institute needs to be contacted. After checking, the details need to be updated manually by the seafarer by clicking on the Professional Training Details tab and selecting the type of course and updating them by filling up the details and adding them. Hence in the similar way the Pre-Sea Training details, Photo and Signature also need to be updated. In this way the seafarer’s profile gets updated and the updated INDoS can be obtained by clicking on the Examination link in the Main Menu of the Seafarer’s Profile, which displays a page which has a link to view and print INDoS.

Dangerous Cargo Endorsement or DCE

The Directorate General of Shipping has made the issuance of Dangerous Cargo Endorsement in the Basic level (Operational/Support) for seafarers completely free. Hence thereby anyone willing to obtain a DCE is required to do a Basic Training course for the apropriate type of tanker they are willing to obtain DCE, and upload the essential pages of the Passport in the Update Seafarer Profile-Documents-Upload Documents in the seafarers profile of E-Governance. The E-Governance system will identify the eligible candidates and issue DCE which can be found in the Master Checker section of the profile.
